Institute of socio – esthetic Field Research Berlin

This project has been accomplished at different locations between 2001 and 2005. On the basis of predetermined answer possibilities and the challenge to do own drawings, the artist questions the relation to the own and the strange body.
In collaboration with the Humboldt University/Institute for Empirical Social Research under the direction of Dr. Bodo Lippl 800 applicable questionnaires were scientifically evaluated and analysed in a report. The report is on display at the gallery.

As a basis of this video-installation serves a survey which the artist carried out in the streets of Berlin. The Question was: Imagine you could reproduce your existence. Where and who would you like to be?
In the actual installation, two opposing video screens show two identical persons playing frisbee. The visitor finds himself in between the two screens exactly where the disc would pass in a real game. The background behind the players changes with each launch – as if the players would swiftly translocate from Belgrade to Dubai or from Frankfurt to the South Sea whenever they catch the disc. Each time the surrounding, the context, the time and continent changes according to answers given by the people interviewed in the survey.
The background-videos which show various places of the world have been acquired via publicly accessible sources e.g. the internet, youtube or private videos. These videos were combined with studio-images of the players applying blue-box-technique.

Veronika Witte/DE *1962 creates a reflexive place, which shows identity as a complex construct. In her work, she applies a wide variety of media and art-forms including video, sculpture and installations as well as collaborations with other artists and scientists in interdisciplinary projects and scenic installations. Often her work conducts research along the border where different art disciplines meet. A central focus in all of her works consists of the role our bodies play in our present society and as a resource for future creation. Veronika Witte is interested in the limits of the body, in the ending of its up to now given ‚fatality’ and in the desire to reinvent oneself over and over again.

Originating in classical sculpture, Veronika Witte works on an enlarged „portrait concept“ which she pursues in a multi-disciplined scheme creating a space where art, theatre and sciences meet. She invents questionnaries, interviews and surveys or uses other pseudo-scientific approaches.

In her installations and video-sculptures, she experiments with performative strategies of constructing one´s self making the influence of life-science and the new bio-technologies on our self perception visible. Always she´s been drawing our attention to subjects of fundamental importance: How is our identity constructed? Which meaning has the biographical, social, cultural and scientific context concerning to our bodies and identities? And how do new developments influence our „social body“?

At the end of her studies an independent sculptural production is built with videos, objects but also with large scale scenic installations. Her work is always balanced on a fine line where objects and identities lose their apparent clear shape.

Veronika Witte studied at the Ecôle Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris/FR. She was invited to numerous exhibitions though Europe and received several awards. Since 1999 she has been working closely with theaters (1999-2005 staatsbankberlin, leading the installation part; and creating stage design until now at the Saarland State Theater/DE and at the State Theater Bielefeld/DE).
